PRESIDENT SCHOLARSHIP
$4,000 scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen on the basis of scores on the January Placement Test taken at Guerin Prep. The top five scores will be considered for the scholarships after review of elementary school records and receipt of a recommendation from the elementary school. The scholarship is renewable for the sophomore year, if the student is enrolled in honors/high honors classes, maintains a 3.7 average with no semester grade below a C and gives evidence of leadership. No scholarship application required.
PRINCIPAL SCHOLARSHIP
$3,500 scholarships are also awarded to incoming freshmen on the basis of scores on the January Placement Test taken at Guerin Prep. The sixth through the tenth top scores will be considered for the scholarships after review of elementary records and receipt of a recommendation from the elementary school. The scholarship is renewable for the sophomore year, if the student is enrolled in honors/high honors classes, maintains a 3.25 average with no semester grade below a C and gives evidence of leadership. No scholarship application required.
BETTY WALSCHEID SCHOLARSHIP*
This fund, established in the name of Betty Walscheid, alumna and faculty member of Mother Theodore Guerin High School, provides for up to two renewable tuition scholarships of $1,500 each. Application for the award is open to sophomores enrolled in Chemistry-Honors who have completed Biology in their freshman year. The award is applied against tuition in the student’s junior and senior years provided the student meets the criteria of the award. A separate application must be completed and submitted by Jan. 31.
SISTER GERTRUDE SMITH SCHOLARSHIP*
This fund, established in the name of Sister Gertrude Smith, SP, enables Guerin Prep to offer a minimum of 20 awards of $1,000 each to students who demonstrate the following: successful completion of one or more years of schooling at Guerin Prep with an average of 2.5 or better, active participation in extracurricular activities, evidence of good citizenship in and out of school and financial need. Applications are available in January.
HAROLD AND GENEVIEVE KENNING SCHOLARSHIP*
This fund, established in memory of Harold and Genevieve Kenning, provides for one $1,000 scholarship for a graduate of St. Celestine Grade School who demonstrates overall academic achievement of a B average or better; financial need may also be a factor. The student must take the entrance exam at Guerin Prep High School. At this time, the scholarship is for freshman year only. The application is available in January.
THERESE MARIE CUNY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was created to honor the memory of Therese Marie Cuny, the first drama teacher at Mother Theodore Guerin High School. Junior girls with a GPA of C+ are eligible to apply. In all, four awards will be made: the first is equal to the cost of a year’s tuition; the other three are for $1,000 each. All four awards can be applied only to senior year tuition at Guerin Prep. Applicants are required to submit a written application and two letters of recommendation from Guerin Prep faculty or administrators. After reviewing these applications, a committee will invite selected applicants to make an oral presentation. Recipients will be selected from those making the oral presentation. Applications are available in February for current junior girls.
LYONS FREBAULT SCHOLARSHIP*
This fund has been established in honor of the Merle F. Lyons and Francis Frebault families. The fund provides several scholarships at a minimum of $500 each. The scholarship is available for students with a documented learning disability who have financial need. At this time, the scholarship is for freshman year only. Applications are available in January.
REALTY WORLD ALL PRO, INC. SCHOLARSHIP
• Student must have taken the entrance exam at Guerin Prep High School - no scholarship application required.
• $1,000 scholarship—$500 from Realty World All Pro, Inc. and $500 from Guerin Prep High School.
• Student must have attended grade school at St. Celestine, St. Cyprian, St. Francis Borgia, St. Vincent Ferrer, St. William or St. Priscilla.
• Offered to top student at each school.
• Minimum 3.5 GPA required. GPA taken from first semester of eighth grade.
• Student must be accepted and enrolled at Guerin Prep High School.
• Offered for qualifying students for freshman year only.
OUTSIDE SOURCES FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
IRISH FELLOWSHIP EDUCATIONAL GRANT
Applicants should have at least two of their eight great-grandparents from the Republic of Ireland. Applicants, preferably freshmen or sophomores, will be chosen solely by need.
HIGHSIGHT SCHOLARSHIP HighSight awards partial four-year scholarships for students to attend private high schools. To qualify you must currently be in eighth grade and live in Chicago. HighSight also provides academic and social support to enable its students to succeed at the high school of their choice. HighSight scholars are expected to demonstrate a commitment to their education and show a motivation to succeed. Qualifying families must exhibit financial need. The HighSight application is available at www.highsight.org.
LINK UNLIMITED SCHOLARSHIP Link Unlimited is a not-for profit organization that provides four-year high school scholarships, mentoring and support programming to low-income Chicagoland African-American area eighth grade students who possess high academic potential and strong personal character. Families must demonstrate financial need. The Link Unlimited application lists the specific requirements to qualify for this scholarship. The Link Unlimited application is available att www.linkunlimited.org. The Link Unlimited application must be mailed to Link Unlimited by the published due date in March of 2006.
DANIEL MURPHY SCHOLARSHIP The Daniel Murphy Scholarship Foundation encourages eighth graders to apply for four-year, private college preparatory high school scholarships. In early September applications are mailed to more than 800 public and private schools. All eighth graders interested in the scholarship should contact their principals, counselors and teachers to request an application. * Important Directions: please note, when applying for Kenning, Walsheid, Lyons-Frebault or Smith scholarships, you must complete all three steps below:
1) Complete and return the first page, "Financial Aid Information Sheet," to the Guerin Prep High School business office by Jan. 31. English Spanish
2) Mail the Private School Aid Service Student Aid Form (the pages that follow the "Information Sheet" in the same application packet) and all requested documentation (such as 1040s and W-2s -- please refer to application for details) and your check for the processing fee ($20) by Jan. 31 directly to their offices at the address provided on the application.
3) Complete separate applications for the Kenning, Walsheid, Lyons-Frebault or Smith scholarships and return them to the Guerin Prep High School business office by Jan. 31.
