Questions and Answers to Practical Matters...

Laptop Policies and Sample Lease

Q. Can students buy their own laptops at someplace like Best Buy?
A. No, Guerin Prep students lease specific laptops to ensure compatibility with our network and software, access to upgrades and support, educational content and tools, loaners and spare parts.

The retail cost of all the software and hardware Guerin Prep provides is about $3,600. Because of our vendor agreements, not only will they receive fully-enabled laptops, but also immediate support and loaners if needed, typically at no cost.

Q. After four years of leasing, will students own their computers?
A. The hardware remains the property of Guerin Prep, however there will be a modest “buy-out” cost for software.

Q. When do students receive their laptops and what instructions
do they get about use and care?

A. We provide full orientation for parents and students at the beginning of the school year. This includes the laptop lease, warranty and repair procedures, security discussion and Guerin Prep’s use policy and expectations.

Q. Will all the students’ textbooks be on the laptop or will books need to be purchased as well?
A. Books for most freshmen core classes are loaded. We are researching all options to add books for other classes. Those books may be rented, or purchased used or new.

Q. What about safety issues?
A. The technology department maintains filtering software to block access to inappropriate sites while students are connected to the school’s network. Proper decision-making is an integral part of our program. Parents are advised to carefully monitor use at home.

To ensure physical safety, students are instructed on proper procedures for handling their laptop when traveling to and from school and during extracurricular activities. Special cases that fit inside a typical backpack are available for purchase.

Q. What if something goes wrong with the laptop?
A. Routine damage is covered under a comprehensive warranty with the exception of intentional damage. Batteries are covered for one year. Loss or theft are not covered, but check your home-owner’s policy for coverage in this area.
